The Fairmont San Francisco San Francisco, California
It is said that greatness springs from tragedy. For proof of this, look no further than San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel. The Beaux Arts-style property, designed by celebrated architect Julia Morgan (the genius behind the grandiose Hearst Castle), was about to open when its city suffered a devastating earthquake on April 18, 1906. The hotel didn't endure severe damage from the seismic activity, but fires that followed the quake soon claimed much of the property.
One year to the day after the disaster, the Fairmont Hotel San Francisco opened its doors to celebrate the rebirth of this great city. It sits atop Nob Hill, affording breathtaking views of the city and bay while offering easy access to the Financial District, Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. The Fairmont San Francisco is also located at the only spot in the city where each of the cable car lines meet.
In addition to 591 guest rooms and suites, the hotel boasts two fabulous restaurants and lounges and 55,000 square feet of function space. A 23-story tower was added in 1961 and includes the city's most sought after function space, the Crown Room located on the top floor. A recent $85 million restoration has since retrofitted the entire complex, re-introducing the lobby as one of the city's central meeting places and refurbishing every guest room and suite to include dual phone lines and high-speed Internet access.
But the Fairmont Hotel's history still reigns supreme--after all, this is where the delegates met in 1945 to draft the United Nations Charter. Starting with Harry Truman, every U.S. president has stayed at the Fairmont. And in the ornate Venetian Room, Tony Bennet first sang his signature tune, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Visit the Hotel Fairmont and you'll understand why.
The Fairmont San Francisco celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2007.
